About

Léa Birnbaum recently graduated with a Master's Degree in Historical Performance from the Juilliard School in New York. Student of Philippe Muller and Roland Pidoux at the Paris Conservatoire, Léa received a Master of Music in Cello Performance in 2012. She also worked with Karine Georgian during her year on exchange in Manchester, England, and has been trained by Frans Helmerson, Ophélie Gaillard, David Geringas, Natalia Gutman, and Ralph Kirshbaum during several master-classes.

Passionate about orchestra playing, Léa has given performances throughout Europe, Asia, and North Africa as a principal and co-principal cellist of the Youth Lutoslawski Orchestra, Promethée Orchestra, Ostinato Orchestra, RNCM Orchestra, CIC Chamber Music Orchestra, and Pulcinella Ensemble. She has had the pleasure of working under the baton of William Christie, Jordi Savall, Maxim Vengerov, Suzana Malki, Mazaaki Suzuki amongst others and to perform chamber music concerts with musicians like Robert Mealy, Cynthia Robert or Christoph Hammer.

Lately, Lea has been playing with the Paris National Opera .

Léa regularly plays in different baroque ensemble such as Pulcinella, Clarion Music Society, New York Baroque Incorporated and has been invited to participate to the TafelMusik Winter Institute as well as the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique in the Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes.

She also plays with the Paris Cello Ensemble, created by Francois Salque. The group is invited to play at the Theatre de la Ville and the Chatelet in Paris, the Grand Theatre in Le Havre as well as festivals such as Prades, Beauvais, Festival des Abbayes, Musique en Albrais, Voutes Celéstes and Val d'Aulnay.

Léa recently participated at the inauguration of the 6th continent with the Unesco at the WW1 Museum in Peronne, France. Together with five other cellists, they premiered a piece written for the occasion.

She also performs in a trio with her two brothers, known as the “Birnbaum Trio”, which won the First Prize of Honor at International Competition Leopold Bellan.

Lea plays on a German baroque cello lent by the Fond Instrumental Francais and is a recipient of the Societe Generale and Adami Awards 2012 and 2013.

She recently won a position at the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse in France, and she will start working there in  April 2015.

I have been teaching for over 10 years, both in music schools and privately. I have a lot of experience with kids but also adults. I can teach either in English or in French!
