Connecting the Dots: Easy Music Theory for Guitar Camp

Guitarists, and especially beginners, often have little, if any, experience with simple music theory. I believe it is fun and will try to show that to you too. We will demystify it.

I see a lot of teens and undergrads who are good players but don't know any sight-reading or theory and have to learn it to pass tests for schools and colleges.

This could be the summer crash-course that preps you to play with others, learn the terminology in a fun way, and go from being a regular chord strummer to a musician who can improvise, solo, and hold your own with confidence.

Camp Schedule

This camp starts July 28 and will meet thrice a week on the following schedule:

ABOUT SARA LANDEAU

I am the guitarist and co-songwriter in pop-punk-dance feminist band The Julie Ruin and have been a full-time guitar instructor in NYC since 2003. My students are primarily one-on-one but I've also created group guitar classes and band courses for women and girls. I find learning music theory fun, but won't force it on you (well, just a bit). I believe learning the fundamentals and ideas behind WHY songs work will help you to teach yourself and grow a foundation to build upon. Learning from several angles, in the beginning, is essential - songs, patterns, a little theory, creative accidents - they all add up to you becoming a guitarist and musician. If you have gaps in your knowledge, we can fill them. I have a large library of educational resources and cross reference from several books and study materials. We will aim towards any style(s) you are most interested in. Students of all ages are welcome. Specialization includes adults learning an instrument for the first time.

STUDENTS SAY
Sara is awesome! What a relief to learn from a guitar PRO instead of a guitar BRO. I was skeptical about signing up for a group class, unsure of what level I am compared to other students etc, but I am glad I did. It motivated me to get back into a practice schedule with just the right amount of structure, theory, and inspiration.

This was my third course cycle with Sara and Lessonface. Thank you for the consistent instruction during these bumpy months. My technical skills are improving with the guitar studies, and this group is helping me keep a positive spirit. Learning hand technique was most helpful. Along with chords, scales + stylization. Easy-going + smart instruction — I love it!

TBH I was a little worried about how a not-in-person group class was gonna go...and let me just say, it was beyond awesome! I went into it an absolute beginner and emerged at the end of the last class as someone who is confidently strumming and picking up my guitar every day because I now have the foundation to have fun while I keep practicing! Sara did a great job of meeting us all where we were in our practice and not moving too quickly just to get through a basic and impersonal lesson plan. Instead, she took her time to let us work things out when we needed and focused on the skills that we as a group showed the most interest in learning. Thanks, Sara!
