Folksongs with Callum McSherry

Each week we will look at and learn a new English, Celtic (Irish/Scottish/Welsh) or American folk-song.

This will include exploring the origin or meaning of the song, learning a basic accompaniment along with suggestions for harmonic variations, and the melody. PDFs of lyrics with chord charts will be made available prior to each class for those that want to familiarize themselves with the changes ahead of time.

Over the course of multiple sessions, students will learn the stylistic differences between traditions and pick up practical tips for creating their own arrangements of songs, from chord substitutions to metric variation.

ABOUT CALLUM MCSHERRY

I am a classically trained violinist with a PhD in musicology living in Bellingham, WA. Originally from London (UK), I have a wealth of experience garnered from 20+  years of musical training and performance. Between the ages of 12 - 18 I attended the junior department of Trinity College of Music (London) before receiving a 1st in my Music BA  (2012) and my doctorate (2020) from the University of Bristol, UK.

I have performed professionally since 2012 in both the UK and USA in an array of contexts from pubs, bars and festivals to weddings and funerals. In 2015 when I first moved to Denver from London I stared teaching violin and guitar and have loved taking a few students to work with at a time ever since.
