Learning by Ear: Developing the Ear-to-Instrument Connection!

Ear training for music online class

This class will focus on training the ear to identify notes, rhythms, and short melodies to foster a connection between what we hear and the notes on a given instrument.

This will give students the ability to pick up phrases on their instruments by relying on their ear alone, improving musical memory, pitch, and comprehension of music theory.

The class will feature call-and-response, starting with the notes of the blues scale, and gradually building on to learning full songs and even transcribing improvised solos by ear.

All instruments and levels are welcome.

Natalie Cressman

About Natalie Cressman

Trombonist, vocalist, and composer Natalie Cressman defies the expected. Her vocal agility and crystalline delivery, paired with her expressive range on trombone, offers audiences a fully three-dimensional experience. Hailing from an illustrious musical family, the San Francisco-raised trombonist, vocalist, and composer has been adopted by a disparate cast of masters, and at 21-years-old she’s honed a preternaturally worldly conception of her own.

Students Say

Natalie Cressman is an excellent teacher and was extremely patient and kind with my children. She had them both playing multiple songs by ear in a very short period of time and incorporated fun exercises to strenghten the ear-to-instrument connnection. I highly recommend Nataie for anyone seeking to grow their skills as a musician or vocalist. She is great!

— Greg M.

My lesson with Natalie was fantastic and I look forward to continuing to work with her. She gave me great exercises to work on my technique, range, and ear and sent me a full recap of everything we did so I can practice easily. Thank you so much Natalie!

— Charles I.

Luke said that he got lots of great tips on warmup exercises that will help him to extend his range and he would love to continue having lessons with Natalie.

— Heather R.
