Understanding Modes for Intermediate and Advanced Piano Players

About Understanding Modes for Intermediate and Advanced Piano Players

In this class, my aim is to help intermediate and advanced players and students who have at least a little background in music theory to grasp the seven musical modes.

This topic is often confusing, especially since each mode can be seen as a major scale starting and ending on a different root note. So if that's all they are, then what is the point? Why do we say we're in D Dorian when we could just say we are in C major?

Hopefully throughout the course of this class, you will begin to understand in more detail how and why each mode shines in its own special way, and how they can be used to compose and modulate, opening up a world of harmonic and melodic possibilities.

This class is limited to 15 students.

Class Goals

  • - Memorize the order of each mode relative to C major
  • - Memorize the order of each mode from Lightest to Darkest
  • - Begin to understand the function of each mode in parallel motion instead of relative motion
  • - Compose a sample song using at least one mode

It was very informative as far as theory goes. Teacher has excellent knowledge of the subject and is good for advanced students. I am looking forward to learning more and applying the theory in my own music compositions. Only feedback is sometimes the teacher's mic sound would cut off and I couldn't hear what he's saying on top of the piano audio.
