Beginning Oboe Reed-Making Camp

How to make reeds for the oboe

"This is an introductory reed-making course for intermediate to advanced oboe students who are interested in learning to make their own reeds. Reed-making is an important skill to develop as students progress on the oboe. Purchasing reeds can become quite expensive over time, and students often don't feel quite comfortable on reeds that other reed-makers are making. When making their own reeds, students have the opportunity to develop a reed that is the perfect fit for their own playing. Most colleges also require oboe majors to make their own reeds, so beginning to learn as a high school student is ideal, and the summer is a perfect time to start!

In this course students will learn reed-tying, knife sharpening, and basic scraping technique, as well as simple reed-adjustments. Students will need to supply their own materials.

Required materials:
10 pieces of gouged and shaped cane
5 47 mm staples
1 or 2 flat plaques
1 spool of FF thread
1 block of beeswax
1 ruler (metric system)
1 cutting block
1 oboe mandrel
1 double-hollow ground knife
1 Indian Oil sharpening stone.

Supplies can be found on such sites as:

Many of these places also offer a beginning reed-making kit which should include all or most of the required materials. This one is highly recommended:
