First Musical Steps with the Recorder

The recorder is the perfect instrument to get young children started with learning music! It is the ideal size for a small child, and the lung capacity needed to produce a sound from it is such that makes it easily playable by a youngster, with the possibility of producing a fine tone quite early on in the process.

This class is designed for children with no prior knowledge of music-making, note-reading, or theory.

In this class we will start learning in a playful and fun manner how to make sounds on our recorders, how to read music and understand various musical symbols, we will learn about different kinds of music, we will play easy and beautiful melodies on the recorder, and it is my biggest wish that this class will instill a love of music into the hearts of young children, in addition to teaching them musical skills.

Students will need a wooden or plastic recorder in working condition, a notebook, a pencil, and (preferably) a music stand.

Diana Desai

Hello there! My name is Diana Desai. I am a professional flautist based in northern California. I have been playing flute for 12 years. I began studying this instrument in California, but received a lot of my training in Saint Petersburg, Russia in the renowned "Saint Petersburg State Music College named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov", where I studied under the guidance of great musicians--soloists of some of the best orchestras worldwide. Currently I am living with my husband in California. I am equally excited about working with complete beginners and with intermediate level students! My teaching experience encompasses more than three years of working privately with students of all ages, levels and backgrounds. I always try to make my lessons as exciting and inspiring to my student as I can, employing innovative approaches to understanding and interpreting music. Teaching flute to others is my passion, and I am excited to start this journey into the amazing world of music with you!

Student Say

Diana is amazing we missed a lesson today and she took the time to make a video for us to use. She is absolutely the best instructor I could hope for. Now I would like a window to be able to write this as a review to her.
