Introduction to Rhythm and Counting

About Introduction to Rhythm and Counting

In this class, we'll study rhythm and how it holds the song together.  We'll use the following time signatures:  4/4, 3/4, and 6/8.  We'll learn how to count whole notes, half notes, and quarter notes, which we'll use for the first 2 time signatures.  Eighth notes and dotted quarter notes will be used with the 6/8 time signature.  (Eighth notes and dotted quarter notes are more tricky in some time signatures, but are easier to understand in 6/8.)

After we talk about the note values and time signatures, we'll play songs using what we've learned.  Since people will be playing at different levels, I'll include an easier and a more complex version for each time signature.

If we have time I'll show you some examples of unusual time signatures, such as 5/4 and 7/4!

Class Goals

- Learn note durations
- Practice rhythmic steadiness
- Count in different time signatures

Class: Piano for Kids with Beverly Cashin

Grateful for an amazing first experience!! Super impressed with Mrs. Cashin's ability to effortlessly navigate teaching young piano learners of all levels— VIRTUALLY. Our 8 year old joined with no experience, and was welcomed with open arms and gentle, expert guidance. We can see her progressing nicely here. Thank you and looking forward to future lessons!

Beverly did a great job! She sent a link to pdfs ahead of time that we use in the class. She taught us how to play songs by talking and demonstrating it. We were able to see her keyboard, which helped immensely. We had breakout sessions for she helped us individually as well. Great class!

I love this class. I'm pretty good at imitating rhythms when I hear them but I need to learn how to work out a rhythm from a score when I haven't heard the piece played out loud and this class exposes me to lots of rhythms.

I love Beverly's compositions that she uses for the classes. I seem to learn better by learning songs rather than exercises so I feel like I'm picking up new concepts quickly.

I really loved one of the pieces in today's class. It was a very magical sounding song. Also learned that I'm sitting too close to the piano so I'm trying not to do that in future.

I'm pretty good at imitating rhythms if I hear them out loud but I'm not as good at figuring out complex rhythms on paper scores alone so this class is important to me for that reason.

Beverly is excellent at chose pieces that cater to the skill levels of the class. There's always at least one that I'm pretty sure I can get the hang of.

Brilliant as always, I like the fact Beverly pitches her classes at two levels so if something looks too daunting then there's something else to work with.
