Batik on Fabric: Woodblocks, Beeswax, and Dye

About Batik on Fabric: Woodblocks, Beeswax, and Dye

Watch an engaging demonstration from a teaching artist who has studied with 5th-generation woodblock batik artists in Gujarat, India. Using the tools and techniques learned from this rich tradition, Jess is teaching American batik artists how to create beautiful fabrics and garments in her Asheville, NC studio. Subjects demonstrated and discussed will include types of waxes and their various uses and qualities in batik, fabric prep, the woodblocks and their properties (you can't use any old wooden textile stamp!), fiber reactive dyes and how to prep and apply them, multi-layered designs, and wax removal. This class will be held virtually from a 700-square foot batik studio, with plenty of examples ready to be shown.

NOTE: This is a demo/lecture with Q&A, students will watch and learn but will not be batiking anything themselves during class.

This class is limited to 50 students.
