Keys to Listening to Music... In a French Way

About Keys to Listening to Music... In a French Way

Would you like to discover a holistic French-style “note-reading/ear-training/rhythm-training” system? Would you like an overview of how music pieces are organized? Would you like to have a good time (re)discovering one of the most famous French actors/singers of his time, Fernandel (1903–1971), through an interpretation of one of his songs? Do you wonder how music notation came about? Then this short course is especially made for you!

French-style specialized note reading, ear training, and rhythm training in a holistic way can be a very powerful tool to become a better musician. It is also hyper-effective using it to start learning in a very comprehensive way.

As a French person and a professor of this very discipline in a French conservatory, it is my pleasure to introduce you to some key aspects of this field I love so much. Whatever your level, you will explore listening to music in your mind, ponder how to make sense of a musical phrase, and learn how to listen to several sounds at once. You will also explore what it means to listen to rhythm (beyond simply understanding and feeling it). This course will link sound to its notation.
Questions such as “How did music notation start?” “Where does the treble clef come from?” “What is the best French system to read notes with no need to re-learn note reading every time you change clef?” or “How does one give life to music written on a piece of paper?” will be answered. You will also take time to understand—with your ears—how a piece of music can be built and how understanding its organization can inform its performance. A French song recorded by French artist Fernandel in the 1960s will serve as a case study, so you can enjoy a little bit of French culture (and a laugh), too.

You definitely will end this short course holding some keys to listening to music better.
