About Let's Look at Long Draw Spinning Part 2 - Drafting
“Long draw” is a name we give to several similar drafting techniques that all result in a lofty, woollen-style yarn. Each technique allows the twist to enter our drafting zone, but there are differences in the way we draft that may make one method easier for you to use than others while still giving us all yarns with similar characteristics. This hand-on workshop will give you an opportunity to try the different ways we can draft a long draw to find the one that works for you.
Topics covered will include:
defining long draws and woollen-style yarns
a brief review of fibre selection and preparation
spinning wheel set-up; the different drafting techniques
plying considerations
controlling twist and diameter in long draw spinning.
Participants are encouraged to learn more about fibre preparation for long draw spinning by taking Part one, Fiber Prep on May 18, 2024.
The capacity for this class is 50 students.
Class Materials
- A spinning wheel or e-spinner in good working condition. A spindle is also suitable for the exercises in this workshop.
- Lazy Kate and at least 3 bobbins
- Wool or cotton fibre prepared for long draw spinning: rolags, rovings, sliver, or top (Detailed descriptions and fibres prepared in Session One are intended for use in this class)
- Hand cards
- Scissors
- Labels for samples
- Materials for note taking (pen or pencil, notebook)

Skill Level
Intermediate - Comfortable with your spinning wheel, able to spin a continuous thread.
