Class Goals

  • Foundational Understanding: The primary goal of the class is to provide students with a solid foundational understanding of essential music theory concepts. By the end of the course, students should be able to confidently read musical notation, understand basic rhythmic and harmonic principles, and identify key components of musical structure.
  • Practical Application: Another important goal is to facilitate the practical application of music theory knowledge. Through hands-on exercises, listening activities, and composition tasks, students will develop the ability to apply theoretical concepts in real-world musical scenarios. This goal aims to ensure that students not only grasp theoretical concepts intellectually but also develop practical skills that they can use in their musical endeavors.
  • Critical Listening and Analysis: The class aims to cultivate students' ability to critically listen to and analyze music. By studying pieces from various genres and styles, students will learn to identify and articulate the structural, harmonic, and rhythmic elements present in music. This goal encourages students to develop a deeper appreciation for music and enhances their ability to communicate effectively about musical compositions.
