Essential Foundations of Oil Painting:
Introduction to materials: paints, brushes, canvases, and more
Understanding color theory and mixing
Exploring basic "alla prima" brushwork and techniques

Creating Depth and Realism:
Grasping the concept of light and shadow
Techniques for achieving three-dimensional form that aren't boring
Loose and gestural painting techniques

Composition and Design:
Principles of balanced composition
Creating focal points within floral arrangements
The power of a well placed brushstroke

Color Mastery:
Color mixing and harmonization
Creating mood and atmosphere through color choices
Expressing emotions through a vibrant color palette

How to be Yourself:
Cultivating your own creative voice
Painting exercises you can do in 30 minutes or less
Be nice to yourself when learning a new skill

This class is presented in collaboration with John C. Campbell Folk School and Lessonface. Class capacity is 25 students. Registration closes on September 4, 2024. Students are invited to attend a large group Orientation and Closing Ceremony to connect with various classes online.


Class Materials

Students will want to provide:

- oil paints (Titanium white, Ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow, Alizarin crimson, cadmium red, burnt umber)
- a roll of shop towels (they're usually blue)
- palette: either disposable palette pad, or a piece of glass 16x20 inches
- two brushes: filbert shape, bristle brush size 10 and 6
- one metal palette knife
- oil painting paper (available from arches brand)
- small canvases, canvas panels, or wood panels, size 5x7 to 8x10
