POETRY OF NATURAL WORLD
For those who love a well-turned phrase inspired by strong connections to nature, this class provides foundational information about poetry: style variations, imagery techniques, prose to poem mapping, and revision considerations. Uncloak the mystery of turning prose meanderings into meaningful poetry. . Elements of poetry such as alliteration, symbolism, metaphor, and allusion plus various forms written over the centuries.

“Poetry breaks” of classical nature poems by various poets such as W.B. Yeats, Robert Frost, John Muir, and Carl Sandburg will be shared along with contemporary nature poets such as Mary Oliver and Sara Teasdale.

Class Goals:
GOAL 1: To familiarize students with various poetic elements to deepen imagery, ideas, and clarity.
GOAL 2: To share methods of transforming prose into poetry by participating in brainstorming on natural world topics.
GOAL 3: To teach students various poetic forms from which they may choose to create original works.

This small group class is presented in collaboration with John C. Campbell Folk School and Lessonface. Students are invited to attend an optional Orientation and Closing Ceremony to connect with various online Folk School classes.

For over 35 years, Bobbie Pell has shared her love of story with audiences of all ages through written works, storytelling performances, and workshops. Her specialty area, Celtic folklore and traditions, focuses on faerie lore, ballads, and archetypical myths. Her first book, THE HIGHLAND HEART, explores themes of true love, faerie encounters, and a hero's journey to wholeness.
