Unlocking True Crime in Traditional Murder Ballads
Unlocking True Crime in Traditional Murder Ballads with Cate Clifford
Using a traditional Appalachian ballad chronicling a true crime committed in North Carolina, attendees explore the history and basics of broadside ballads, the subgenre of “good nights”, and what they can tell us about crimes and criminals of the past. Participants receive resources for research into ballads and explore online archives with classmates for songs to learn.
This small group class is presented in collaboration with John C. Campbell Folk School and Lessonface. Students are invited to attend an optional Orientation and Closing Ceremony to connect with various online Folk School classes.
