Using Pick Up Sticks

About Using Pick Up Sticks

Take it to the next level! If you already know the basics on your rigid heddle loom, create beautiful patterns while learning to use pick-up sticks. These complicated-looking patterns can be achieved with relative ease. Make a beautiful sampler while mastering this technique and learning many textural patterns.

The capacity for this class is 25 students.

Class Materials

• Warped rigid heddle loom
• 2 pick up sticks appropriately sized for your loom
• 12” x 3” piece of light colored cardboard or manilla file folder
• 400 yards of worsted weight yarn in a solid color that is smooth, strong, non-hairy, and at least 2 ply. This includes the yarn used for your warp. You can also use 200 yards each of 2 different solid colors and warp with one color, saving the second color for weft.
• About 10-15 yards of waste yarn (acrylic works best)
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• Cardboard tube from inside a paper towel roll
• 2 brown paper grocery bags

Pre-class Homework

• Print the handout and bring it to class.
• Warp the loom with 48 ends (24 slots, 24 eyes) with a 83” warp, using a 7.5 or 8 dent reed and about worsted weight yarn. Weave in waste yarn to even out your warp threads and then weave about 1” plain weave, tucking in the tail at the beginning of your weft. NOTE: It is important to have exactly 48 threads in your warp.

Age Range

Teens and Adults

Skill Level
