Violin & Viola Bow Strokes I: Detaché & Martelé
About Violin & Viola Bow Strokes I: Detaché & Martelé
Looking on how to get comfortable with your bow technique on the most possibly relaxed, natural and practical way? Then this interactive class is for you!
Together, we’ll learn about the mother of all bow strokes: a proper Detaché followed by her very close relative: Martelé. Detaché belongs to the Legato family with fluid and continuous motion between notes, played with the middle of the bow for more consistent results. While Martelé feels more at home with the Staccato folks, where individual notes are strongly accented, highlighting their own distinction without blending one note into another, which could be performed in the upper, lower or middle-ish parts of the bow. The perfect example to listen to both strokes is the beginning of the Bach concerto for two violins BWV 1043. Check it out in the links below and please, let me know which one is your favourite!

Take a look inside the class!
As any proper bow technique begins with bow control, we'll start the class by reviewing the most natural and effective bow hold & visual distribution of the bow followed by practical exercises, starting just with your bow. Then, we’ll apply it all to the violin/viola while getting our hands on the understanding and exploring the inner workings of each stroke.
We’ll start with Detaché answering the following questions:
1. Where does it come from?
2. The range of motion needed for the most silky results
3. How much of the bow?
4. And in faster tempo?
5. So…how does it vary if you bow speed changes?
Afterwards, we’ll move to the Martelé stroke. Here, we’ll address the following:
1. The most distinctive difference to the Detaché
2. The most similar sound is…(Bring your guesses to the lesson!)
3. The 1, 2, 3 steps, starting with the upper half of the bow
4. Bow speed involved
5. Adjusting to the lower half and beyond
Interactive, fun and positive learning environment guaranteed! If the time-frame allows, we’ll finish the class by answering at least 3 of the most relevant questions and set up the community to keep on learning together!
Bye for now and I can’t wait to see you inside!
