About

Catherine Bent has brought her cello artistry to Cirque du Soleil, Enya, Joe Jackson, A.R. Rahman, Greg Osby, Lee Konitz, Patty Larkin, Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, Kanye West, Lil Buck, Merce Cunningham Dance, as well as classical orchestras, commercials, and Broadway shows.

Catherine is an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music. She holds a B.A. in music from Vassar College and an M.M in jazz performance from New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied improvisation with Jerry Bergonzi, Dave Holland, and Charlie Banacos.

Catherine has been published in Strings Magazine on bowing and groove in Brazilian music, where she has become an authority. In Brazil Catherine has made many guest appearances on Rádio Nacional as a soloist with choro legend Época de Ouro.  Her 2018 solo release Ideal: an original tribute to traditional Brazilian music has been called "One of the best Brazilian recordings you’ll hear this year” (Vancouver Sun). Roots World claims: “Bent’s compositions...have an instantly classic sound that’ll get you swinging and swaying with delight."

Her current bands are Macayú Trio (chamber jazz),  Trio de Janeiro (world music), Elis & Catherine (Brazilian music with vocals), Quebra Tudo! (avant-garde Brazilian instrumental music) and she is percussionist in Forró Zabumbeca, New England's favorite Brazilian folkloric dance band.

Catherine divides her summers between Brazil and Europe, to perform and teach, broaden her horizons and deepen her musical expression.

I enjoy working with motivated students in any style. My goal is for you to be present in your sound, comfortable in your body, and use your skills in whatever genre you enjoy. Playing cello takes patience and dedication but I can help structure your practice and be your guide in this journey.
I have had students who request 50% cello technique and 50% ear training; others to learn by ear, and practice call-and-response to develop their musical reflexes.  I have even worked with guitarists on playing Bach, and bowed string players of all kinds on groove and time feel.  I can teach the systems of traditional harmony/theory and of contemporary harmony (as taught at Berklee).
Whether you're an adult, senior, or teenager, tell me your goals, and I'll work with you to design a program for your progress!

My cello story is in some ways unique in that I came to cello after more than a decade of playing gigs as bassist and guitarist. Although I have taking some lessons with several excellent teachers over the years I would still describe myself as being largely self taught. While this has been successful in many regards, cello is a technically unforgiving instrument with a requisite need for execution in the most effortless and efficient ways possible. It is in this area that I find the greatest challenge. Cello Flow is a cool exploration of movement and breath and it's possible implications for a better physical relationship while executing music on our beloved instrument. It doesn't dictate "correct" answers but rather raises questions and illuminates alternative options beyond habitual response. Catherine Bent is both knowledgeable and fun to work with. I highly recommend this class as a component of cello study.
