How to Weave a Doubleweave Jacket

About How to Weave a Doubleweave Jacket

Learn to combine the basics of doubleweave and create a sample-size jacket by weaving tubes and layers together. Participants should be familiar with the following doubleweave techniques: independent layers, double width, vertical tubes and making seams.

The basic construction of a jacket will be discussed followed by students weaving a miniature “sample” jacket. The techniques learned will enable participants to plan a full-size jacket on the loom to weave after class. Here is a link to a video of the full-size jacket: https://tinyurl.com/ymbfarhz.

If your loom is not wide enough to weave a full size jacket, and you are near north-central North Carolina, weaving sessions are available at the Yadkin Valley Fiber Center (https://www.yadkinvalleyfibercenter.org/) for $150. This includes 3-day loom rental, lunch each day and guidance on how to weave your jacket. Scheduled by appointment - click on Leslie’s bio and message her to make arrangements.

Please reach out if you have any questions about the yarns or warping instructions. I look forward to having you in class and sharing how to weave a doubleweave jacket with you.

This class is limited to 12 students.

Class Materials Needed

• I recommend using a yarn that can be sett at 8 epi. Think worsted weight or #4 knitting yarn. This will allow you to clearly see the cloth as it is being woven. If you are taking all three classes, message the instructor for info on putting one long warp if you wish.
• Put on a 3 yard warp of enough ends for a 10” weaving width. For example, if your yarn is sett at 8 epi x 10” = 80 ends x 2 (since it’s doubleweave) = 160 ends total. Adjust this for the sett of your yarn.
• Thread the heddles 1, 2, 3, 4.
• Double sley your threads at 8 epi, which means you will have a total of 16 threads per inch (8 epi per layer of cloth).
You will be using a direct tie up to weave the sample jacket. If you are using a floor loom the tie up for your loom is 1+3, 1, 2, 3, 4, 2+4.
• To check the threading weave tabby shafts 1+3 and 2+4 alternately. Weave in the Header and advance the warp a couple of inches.
