Off-Loom Weaving

About Off-Loom Weaving

Learn how to weave without a loom, using a wooden board, and a needle and thread!

Whether you’re a seasoned weaver or a total beginner, these little creations are magical to do - and better yet, you can do it from your sofa! Discover a new skill, meet like-minded people and enjoy the rewarding feeling of having made something beautiful from scratch, using yarns discarded from the textile industry.

In this workshop we'll put functionality and fashion aside for a moment to celebrate woven cloth, and the structures used to create it. These little woven studies, using a needle and thread, are a great exercise for getting to grips with the basics of weaving without the complexity of the loom.

We'll start with a simple twill, then we'll try a dogtooth, and even a plaid or two. There is so much to explore with woven structure, colourful yarns and a needle. The possibilities are endless! After that we will sample various other weave structures and plaid designs, as well as other bases, like rocks, slate, tiles, and other forms.

There will be plenty of time for questions, discussion, and some book recommendations at the end. Sarah will provide PDF instruction manuals via email, prior to the workshop. Students won't need them during the workshop, but they can be useful to look over beforehand, and to look back on when students are weaving on their own.

This class is limited to 20 students.
