About

My name is Emily and I teach French Horn! I am from the US originally, but I currently live in Germany, where I am pursuing a master's degree at the Musikhochschule Trossingen. I have a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Carolina as well as a Master of Music degree from Indiana University. I also completed postgraduate studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Weimar, Germany. I was contracted as 3rd horn in the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra (Bosnia-Herzegovina) from 2017-2018 and I have also freelanced in the Raleigh-Durham (NC) area. My goal is to win a permanent position in a German orchestra.

My teaching methods are always tailored to the needs and goals of the student in front of me. I am a very calm, patient, and positive teacher because I believe this brings the best results out of the student. When I give instruction or correction, I do so gently and clearly so that the student feels comfortable and confident. I have taught French horn privately and I have also taught English online and while these areas are very different on the surface, in essence, the goal is always to become more comfortable expressing yourself in a new way. My students should always leave their lessons feeling more confident and motivated than they did at the start!

Master of Music, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (2019)
Bachelor of Music, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2016)

This will depend on the level of the student. For middle school and (underclassmen) high school students, (in the absence of other student materials, such exercises or etudes from the band director), I like the Rubank method books. For more advanced students (who want to study music at university or in a conservatory), I would recommend Maxime-Alphonse and/or Kopprasch.
