Dawn, The Stitching Coach
About
Connecticut high school librarian by day, crafter for life. I'm a certified instructor by BurdaStyle, The Knitting Guild Association and Studio180 Design (quilting) and have taught ages 8-adults since 2008. I advise a high school sewing club as well as volunteer with Days for Girls. Please note, during the summers my schedule changes and is more flexible when school is not in session. Students will find I'm passionate about all needle arts and want to pass that along to all generations and skill levels. Learning to sew, knit or hand embroider can be intimidating, but with the right support can become a lifelong hobby that provides joy to your life. Let me show you how to get started. I look forward to helping you exercise your creative side.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is a blend of coaching, demonstrating and inquiry. I want students to grow through practice and building on foundational concepts to become their best crafter. I use a document camera to demonstrate details during class.
Curriculum
Lessons are tailored to the individual student.
Students will find that I use a variety of teaching methods. After demonstrating, I will ask students to repeat processes. Homework and reading assignments will help students practice and reinforce lessons. Inquiry and project-based learning makes lessons more enjoyable when students are partners in the learning process.
Homework and supplemental texts will depend on the student, their level of knowledge and the complexity of the project. But generally I recommend the following books to beginner level students:
Embroidery - The Cross Stitcher’s Bible by Jane Greenoff (make sure to get the first book, not the revised or second edition, also check your local public library)
Knitting - Principles of Knitting by June Hemmons Hiatt (available at most libraries)
Machine sewing - The Sewing Machine Classroom: Learn the Ins and Outs of Your Machine Book by Charlene Phillips ISBN: 9781440216008 (check your local public library).
