Antonio Gervasoni
About
I am a Peruvian composer with almost thirty years of creative work spanning concert music, film, and musical thought. My catalog includes more than sixty works performed across four continents, eight feature film scores, and a chamber opera. My scores are published by Cayambis Music Press and held in the United States Library of Congress.
I hold a Master of Arts in Composition from the University of Birmingham and have taught composition, orchestration, and film scoring at the university level for eighteen years — including at the National University of Music of Peru, the Universidad de Lima, and the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas, where I served as the founding Director of the School of Music.
My private instruction is directed at advanced students and emerging professionals: composers in the final years of undergraduate study, recent graduates seeking to deepen their craft, and working musicians looking to develop specific skills. If that describes you, I would be glad to hear from you.
Because my schedule changes constantly, I do not offer open hours. Please contact me to arrange a session.
Teaching Style
Composition: My approach to teaching composition is rooted in the same principles that guide my own creative work: the conviction that musical intuition must be developed and refined through structural logic and analytical thinking. I work with each student individually, assigning compositional exercises and providing detailed feedback. The goal is not to impose a style, but to help each student find and develop their own voice. A solid foundation in music theory is required.
Orchestration: I teach orchestration from the ground up for advanced students: the technical characteristics of each instrument and section, the logic of scoring for different combinations, and the relationship between orchestral texture and musical expression. Assignments progress from string writing to full orchestra. Music theory knowledge equivalent to composition lessons is required.
Film Scoring: Drawing on my experience composing for eight feature films, I teach the craft of writing music for the screen: narrative musical functions, the role of musical language in storytelling, synchronization, and the practical realities of the film composition process. Students compose music for short video sequences and receive specific, detailed feedback. Legal and professional aspects of the field are also covered.
