Introduction to Sprang: Part 1 Flat Warp

About Introduction to Sprang Part 1 - Flat Warp

Explore an ancient technique to make a stretchy fabric. There is no weft. Your fingers manipulate the threads to create the structure. We begin with an already warped frame. Receive expert assistance to explore the basic stitch and some of its many variations for surface designs. We also practice setup and diverse finishing techniques. We view irregularities (mistakes) as an invitation to explore deeper into the structure and technique. There are no wrong stitches, just different ones. The initial project completed, participants begin anew from scratch. Explore ways to introduce and use color. We discuss techniques to shape the work into a variety of garments: hat, socks, mittens, vests, shirts, leggings, and shawls, based on inspiration from historic pieces. Participants can expect to complete several small projects, practicing beginning, middle, and ending. The goal is to develop confidence with the basic technique of flat warp sprang, and interest to explore further.

Participants who order a kit will receive a simple already-warped frame. We begin with the basic stitch. We learn how to make the stitch, and discuss the most popular ways things go wrong. Students are encouraged to practice the stitch for the first week to build a firm foundation. In the 2nd session we present the first way to finish off, and then together we set up a new piece from scratch. Sessions 3 and 4 begin with yet another way to finish a piece of sprang, and another option for surface design. The stated goal is comfort with the basic technique and some students will require the 4 weeks of practice to begin to feel confident. In the meantime, others catch on more quickly: thus the “extra credit” surface design techniques offer incentive to keep working as well as offering insight into the myriad of possibilities with sprang.
