So you are familiar with flat warp sprang where cloth grows from the outer edges to a place at the center. The maximum length of the cloth is limited by the length of the frame. Another way to work is circular warp sprang which allows you to create a piece of cloth that is almost twice the length of the frame. The warp is set up in a circuit. Work begins at the cross, and cloth builds up on both sides of the cross? You ask, “What does that mean?” Take the class and find out. Most people who like flat warp sprang really like circular warp, and find it takes things to a whole new level. Circular warp sprang has a far less-noticeable meeting line between the two mirror-image pieces of cloth. This technique is the way to go to make cowls and shawls. Learn from an expert.

We begin by watching a video, offering an overview of the technique. We then begin by setting up the warp together. The most popular ways things can go wrong are mentioned as are ways to avoid these disasters. Once the warp is set up, we practice working in this manner: pushing the mirror-image of each row of work around to the other side of the circuit. In the 2nd session we will discuss ways to finish circular warp sprang. We will discuss the difference between circular warp and flat warp and how to decide which to use for your project. We will also discuss some of the many garments possible with sprang, and offer ideas for setup and shaping.

Class Materials

Sprang frame, warp materials, shed sticks, safety cords, rubber bands, beads.

Materials can be sent as an add-on to the kit for Part 1. That kit has a materials fee of $80 and includes: sprang frame (already warped) as well as warp materials for another project, shed sticks, safety cords, rubber bands, beads, a copy of the book “Sprang Unsprung” and the DVD “Introduction to Sprang” (those without a DVD player will be given access to on-line streaming of the material through taprootvideo.com). Those who already have the book and/or DVD are eligible for a discount.

Note: Students who already have a frame, the instructor strongly prefers that everyone has the same type of frame. If a student has a frame and wants to use it for the class, please contact the instructor.
