Announcing 2023 MET Orchestra Masterclass Series

Lessonface is proud to announce the 2023 Masterclass Season with the MET Orchestra Musicians, with four live online masterclasses scheduled for January through April 2023. The 2023 season features coaching by MET Orchestra Musicians Wen Qian, Weston Sprott, Stephanie Mortimore, and Brad Gemeinhardt. 

These upcoming masterclasses are now accepting applications from advanced-level performers for violin, trombone, flute and piccolo, and horn. As in all of our masterclasses of this series, performers will be selected by a highly qualified third-party adjudicator.

Application deadlines for upcoming classes:

• Violin: January 9, 2023 (for the January 31 live masterclass)
• Trombone: January 30, 2023 (for the February 19 masterclass)
• Flute and Piccolo: March 4, 2023 (for the March 26 live masterclass)
• Horn: March 30, 2023 (for the April 19 masterclass)

In these masterclasses, hosted and sponsored by Lessonface, advanced-level students worldwide perform and receive live feedback from professional musicians of the highest caliber, in true masterclass format. Lessonface and the MET Orchestra Musicians have already concluded 28 live online masterclasses since August of 2020, with 62 selected students from 10 countries together with 50 MET Orchestra Musicians for live, online coaching. 

Applicants considering what piece to submit may want to heed the advice offered to a performer during the 2021 trombone masterclass by Weston Sprott, who is Dean and Director of the Preparatory Division at the Juilliard School, as well as a tenured member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra: "Pick what makes you sound the absolute best. I always have this conversation with high school students who are preparing for college. There's this debate about whether you should play a harder piece or not. People are always going to be more impressed by you playing something you play great on than something that's a little bit beyond what you're capable of doing and you're struggling your way through it."
